The ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championships proved to be a breakthrough moment for the University of Rhode Island Sailing Team, as the Rams advanced to the fleet race finals for the first time since 2021 at the championship regatta hosted by University of South Florida at SkyBeach Resort.
Entering the regatta seeded outside the top 20, URI battled through a highly competitive field and secured the ninth and final spot in the championship finals. The Rams finished tied on points with Fordham University in the Eastern Semi-Finals and advanced on a tiebreaker to clinch the last qualifying position.
Despite competing without one of the team's senior leaders, who was unable to attend due to URI's commencement, Head Coach Joakim Karlsen praised the resilience and determination shown throughout the event.
"I couldn't be more proud of the team getting to this point," Karlsen said. "To make the finals after coming in seeded outside the top 20 says a lot about the hard work and belief this group has shown all season."
Karlsen also credited the many supporters who helped the program reach nationals and gave special recognition to Assistant Coach Kate Bjerregaard for her contributions throughout the season and championship run.
