Ainley’s 51-Save Masterpiece Leads URI to Series Split

The University of Rhode Island women's club hockey team hosted Michigan State University on Friday, February 6, and Saturday, February 7. The Rams split the series with Michigan State, largely due to junior goalie Morgan Ainley's standout performance Saturday night.

Friday: Michigan State 3, URI 0

The Rams fell to the Spartans in an intense, physical game that featured 11 penalties between the two teams. Michigan State capitalized on the power play, scoring two of their three goals with the extra-skater advantage. The Spartans struck early in the first period, then added two more goals in the second to take a 3–0 lead into the final period.

Despite a spirited third-period effort, the three-goal deficit proved too much to overcome. While Michigan State controlled Friday's contest, Saturday belonged to Morgan Ainley and a Rams squad determined to protect home ice.

Saturday: URI 3, Michigan State 1

Less than 24 hours after being shut out, the Rams responded with one of their most resilient performances of the season, defeating Michigan State 3–1 behind a dominant effort from Ainley. After facing 49 shots Friday night, she was tested even more in the rematch, stopping 51 of 52 shots to propel URI to the series split.

URI opened the scoring late in the first period when Isabella Bonfiglio set up Neve Brierton for the goal. The Rams carried that momentum into the second period, where Penny Spack scored less than a minute in to extend the lead to 2–0.

Michigan State controlled much of the puck possession throughout the night, outshooting URI by a wide margin. Ainley and the Rams' defense turned away shot after shot until MSU's Eileen Carey scored on a third-period power play with just over four minutes remaining. Spack sealed the victory with her second goal of the game, finding the empty net in the final minute. Despite being heavily outshot, URI's defensive structure and Ainley's standout performance secured a hard-earned win.

The women's hockey team now sits at 6–14 with two games remaining in the regular season. The Rams will travel to face UMass on Saturday, February 21, before hosting the Minutewomen on Sunday, February 22.
